Appalachian Sustainable Development

Policy Goal:
Increase support for organic and sustainable agriculture by the consuming public and within Extension and the Land Grants.

Issue:
Broadly speaking, the purpose of this plan is to significantly increase public understanding of sustainable agriculture in Central Appalachia, and to increase support for family farmers making the transition to organic and sustainable practices. Through our communications efforts, we intend to both inform people about sustainable farming and enable them to take action that supports such farmers. Central to this communications effort will be the building of support for our public policy issue: Increasing the knowledge base, the skills and the resources within Cooperative Extension and the Land Grant colleges (primarily in Virginia), devoted to organic and sustainable agriculture.

Goals:

  1. Increase support for organic and sustainable agriculture within Extension and the Land Grants, through successful collaborations with practitioners and through increased demand for such services by farmers and consumers.
  2. Increase the demand for Extension and Land Grant university involvement in sustainable agriculture by building a broad demand for organic and sustainable foods around the Commonwealth.
